Halloween Celebration
Excitement filled our classroom first thing this morning. We had a visitor in the classroom, my sister a.k.a "other Ms. Mortenson." Thanks for your help! Every one was so excited to put their costumes on. We went to Mr. Bellamy's class to have lunch with our Grade 8 buddies. It turned out very well. In the afternoon, we finally got to put our costumes on. Our classroom looked GREAT! The parade was short and sweet. We got back to our classroom and played a couple of games. It was lots of fun! Grade one's get a good rest so you are ready for Halloween on Sunday! Happy Halloween!
*Thanks parents and guardians for helping make this day special :)

Carving Pumpkins
The Grade one's want to thank the Grade 8's for helping them carve pumpkins today. The Grade 8's carved the pumpkins and the Grade 1's had to clean the insides of the pumpkins. A lot of the grade 1's did not like getting their hands "yucky". I hope all of the pumpkins made it home safely!
*Tomorrow is the Halloween Party!
*No lunch, no show and tell, but bring library books!

No Buses Running Today!
Today, the buses were not running because of this weather. Only 13 students were able to make it to school today. Our day was a little bit different. Today, we got to together with the Kindergartens for activity time. We also got with Class 1.1 to learn about Halloween safety. Thank-you Mrs. Ivanochko and Mrs. Landstand! Making Potion or Glippity Gloppity Glue
Today, we read a poem called "Potion Chant". After reading the poem we made our own potion. Our potion ingredients included: mustard, ketchup, apple juice, pretzels, cheezies, chocolate chips and marshmallows. Every time we added a new ingredient the Grade One's had to sound out and spell the word on their own potion recipe card! It was pretty gross but a lot of fun!
We also had a birthday in our classroom today. The cupcakes were delicious!

Numbers 0-10
In Math, the Grade one's are starting a new unit. This unit will focus on deepening your child's understanding of number relationships. Today, we were focusing on the learning goal: read and print numbers and number words to 20. The Grade one's really enjoyed using their own whiteboard to copy down their answers.
*Show and tell tomorrow!

Guided Reading
Every day 2, 4 and 5 our class has guided reading. Guided reading provides students time to read at their instructional level. This is where students learn self-help strategies and independence. This is one of the groups I worked with today. We were brainstorming what "we love" in the classroom.
Reminders: *Book Fair Tuesday and Wednesday
**Dress up as your favourite book character on Wednesday!

Mmmmm Muffins!
We had a busy day making pumpkin muffins! Class 1.1 came to our classroom and we shared a great morning together. Each student was responsible for making their own muffin. Each student had to put two tablespoons of milk and pumpkin mix, three tablespoons of flour, two teaspoons of oil, and 6 chocolate chips into their cup. They mixed the ingredients and finally had to put their muffin mix into their muffin liner. The muffins tasted delicious! The Grade One's are great bakers!

Read to Self
The Grade One's have been building their reading stamina. We model the appropriate and inappropriate behaviours before each student finds a quiet and comfortable spot in the classroom. What does "Read to Self "look " and "sound" like? Students read quietly, pick a good spot, stay in one spot, start right away and read the whole time. We also have learned the "3 ways to read a book". Each students has a book box with a few books to read. We read for 4 minutes today! Great Job!!!

I can go in a....
On Wednesday September 29th, the grade one's wrote in their journals. They had to write one or two sentences. I had them all start with "I can go in" then I had them finish the sentence. We had some of the students going into schools and even igloos. Very creative!
