Skip Counting!
In math, the Grade 1's are learning how to skip count by 2's to 20 and 5's to 50! Keep practicing Grade 1.

Carnival!
This afternoon the Grade 1's had a blast at the carnival. There was a variety of activities to participate in. Some of the favourites were: pillow fight, face painting, tattoo parlor, hockey shoot. All proceeds go to the relief efforts in Japan.

Decorating Eggs!
This morning, the Grade 1's went to Mr. Bellamy's classroom to meet their Grade 8 buddies to decorate Easter eggs. The classroom was filled with excitement! The Grade 1's are getting very excited for the Easter break!

Fun with Sidewalk Chalk!
This morning 5 new sight words were introduce: please, only, saw, orange and know. The students went outside to practice spelling the sight words on the pavement using sidewalk chalk.

Day of Pink
It was the celebration of diversity at Yorkdale. The students wore pink to support diversity. There were a lot of Grade one's wearing pink today. The students also got their pink shirts signed!

New Station Games
Today, we learned how to play new language arts games! I taught a few students a game then they were the "experts" and had to teach the game to the other classmates! It worked well!

Library Day
The second last period on Day 1 we go to the library. The students are encouraged to choose one book they can read and one book that can be read to them. The Grade one's enjoy their library trips! Books are always fun!

Car Ramp Measurement
This morning the kids built ramps and measured the distance of three cars. They are starting to use words (farthest, farther, short, shortest, longer, longest) to compare lengths.

Gym with Ms. Mortenson
I enjoyed teaching Phys.ed today. We participated in creative movements and played a new cooperative game. We also started a new unit in math on measurement.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
It was an enjoyable day for the Grade 1's. In the morning, we finger painted with green pudding and made rainbow toast. In the afternoon the kids went tobogganing and had a good time!

Subtraction!
Hello! The Grade 1's have been working hard on subtraction! We are learning the "counting back" strategy. For an example, 12 - 5 = We put the big number in our head (we actually touch our head), we use our fingers to represent the low number then we count backwards. As the student counts backwards they need to touch their five fingers. 11,10,9,8,7
Keep trying this strategy Grade 1!

100 Day Party!

The Grade 1's had the opportunity to work with Mrs. Michalishen and Mrs. Jones in stations today. The kids worked on segmenting words, making words, singing, reading on the computer and playing bingo. Great work Grade 1's!

Learning More About the 5 Senses
The 5 senses are: see, touch, hear, taste and smell. We cut and pasted pictures from newspapers and magazines and we glued them on our posters.

Using Shaving Cream to Print Numbers

Writing Exemplars!!!
Mrs. Ruf and I worked with each student one on one to help them decide what level of writing they are at. The Grade One's took their very first journal entry to see where they started at the beginning of Grade One. We then showed the students where they are now! There has been so much growth! Grade one's keep up your wonderful writing.

Counting Words
Today, we worked on building sentences. We counted the amount of words in each sentence. This helped the students understand the concept of a word! I am seeing so much improvement in their writing! It's awesome!
